The Mitsubishi ASX (abbreviation for Active Smart Crossover) is Mitsubishi’s first-ever diesel engine passenger vehicle to enter the Australian market and is little brother to Mitsubishi’s very popular Outlander.
Although the ASX has the same assertive well-defined front like Outlander, size-wise it doesn’t sit up as high and is 37cm shorter, despite sharing the same sized wheelbase. Available in both 2WD and 4WD, the ASX has three models.
The base level ASX 2WD model is 2.0 litre petrol CVT auto and the ASX 2.0 litre five speed manual. The 4WD mid level model has both a 2.0-litre four-cylinder manual and CVT petrol engine and a 1.8 litre turbo diesel 6 speed manual. The third model which is top of the range is the ASX 4WD Aspire using both the 1.8-litre turbo-diesel six speed manual and the 2.0 litre petrol CVT automatic.
All models come with seven airbags as standard, compatible stereo with mp3 compatible, USB and aux-in interface, standard automatic climate control, stability control, alloy wheels, an electric boot lid opener and cruise control along with traction control and hill-start assistance.
Extras on the mid-range 4WD models include steering wheel controls, front fog-lights, an electronically controlled four-wheel-drive system, rear parking sensors and Bluetooth connectivity.
Extras on the top-end ASX Aspire include Rockford Fosgate nine-speaker stereo with sat-nav, keyless entry with push-button start, power driver’s seat, 17-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, dusk-sensing lights, tinted windows, DVD, iPod integration and Bluetooth.
Mitsubishi’s product planning manager Chris Maxted said they are looking to instigate a new market with the ASX, and says he’s not too put off by the fact that the ASX could take away sales of its big brother, the Outlander. “People that want to buy an Outlander are people who want a bigger car,” said Maxted.
